Professinal Achievements

  •

Lead the scientific team for mapping forest cover of India for the first time (in 1982) using Satellite Remote Sensing using two periods viz. 1972-75 and 1980-82 data sets. Forest Survey of India as an operational programme to prepare State of India’s Forest Report has used the methodology.

  •

Lead the scientific team for preparing Biome map of India under Indian Space Research Organization- Geosphere -Biosphere program (ISRO-GBP). This consists of preparation of first vegetation type map of India and incorporates climatic and environmental variables in GIS to model Biome map of India.
  •

Developed approach for Biodiversity Characterization at landscape level using Remote Sensing and GIS. Landscape ecological parameters have been used to model disturbance gradient and prioritizing biologically rich areas for biodiversity conservation. Digital data base of important biogeographic regions viz., North Eastern India, North West Himalaya, Western Ghats Central India, Eastern Ghats and Mangrove Landscapes of East Coasts and Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been organized as Biodiversity Information System (BIS). Extensive primary field sample data base has been created to monitor biodiversity. The third phase of the project is being implemented in cold and warm desert ecosystems of India.
  •

Made important contributions in Geospatial modeling for wildlife habitat analysis, wetland/grassland management, estimation of above ground biomass and forest productivity in natural forests and plantation, wasteland development planning, landscape analysis, narcotic crop mapping, forest canopy density mapping. Developed analytical tool for microwave remote sensing data for extracting information on forest canopy, type discrimination and digital approach in contextual classification.
  •

Project Director of National Natural Resource Census (NRC) an initiative under NNRMS toward building National Natural Resource Repository (NRR). NRC aims at building up database on land use/ land cover, soil, land degradations, geomorphology, snow and glaciers and wetlands. Under this programme Land use/ Land cover of country has been mapped on 1:250K using IRS P6 AWiFS data. The main highlight of study is to provide net sown area of Kharif, Rabi and Zaid at the end of cropping season as against conventional method of compiling the information and providing them after two and half years.
  •
